Return of the Yeti is the third installment of a performance trilogy—the previous two installments (Beyond Say: An American in Athens and The Umpire Strikes Back) also having been presented at Sub Rosa Space. Like its predecessors, the piece tackles themes of Americana. Return of the Yeti concerns American folk legend, telling the story of a monstruous beast who makes its home in the wilderness. With a deliberate nod to American horror films of the 1970s and 80s (many of which drew on similar folk tales), Lawrence’s performance comments on the transmission of narrative across generation and media. More specifically, Return of the Yeti speaks to the discursive rendering of menace, and how its processes transform over time. Indeed, today menace is generally construed as threats from within the heart of society—namely, in the figure of the radicalized citizen. Lawrence makes use of bygone narratives, where what was to be feared was an aberration from beyond; in the process, he maps a critical topography of fear and its objects—charted across eras and aesthetic fields.
