The exhibition shows a combination of stills and video projections form this synergetic collaboration between artists Ruthi Helbitz Cohen & Diana Blok from different creative and cultural backgrounds with an important role for the sea surrounding the Greek Island Milos.

Helbitz Cohen’s painting & drawing interact with Blok’s photography & video. Their departure points have been books which have a specific connection to both artists. Their origins lie in Uruguay and Israel, with Amsterdam and Milos as a meeting point. Their work begins in 2022 with pen drawings by Helbitz Cohen on the pages of Virginia Woolf's experimental novel "The Waves” (1931). From them an inspiring exchange of ideas form: the title and the actual concept of bathing the drawings in the sea. They draw inspiration from each other's independent works as well as from conversations, images found and texts shared.

The drawings were scanned and placed on the shores of the North Sea in the Netherlands and on the Greek Mediterranean island of Milos, where the waves transformed and manipulated them. This process was photographed and filmed by Blok, who followed the unexpected transformations. Waves, foam, wind, salt and the sounds of the sea mingled in an alchemical process revealing a new body of work which redefines the image and its meaning. From Woolf’s fluid and poetic language, they found continuation in the biblical ‘Book of Judith’, the Book of Hafiz, Song of Songs and others. Historical memory is used as a lens through which the artists distill, reinterpret, or recall personal, historical, and political events, reworking images and text in the process.

Drawing the Waves will show fine art photographic prints of diverse sizes, and three video projections.
